Small by design, GFI partners with local organizations to implement market-based strategies that strengthen livelihoods and decent working conditions for informal sector and grassroots workers with the goals of supporting communities of promise to become centers of prosperity. GFI projects operate globally and are supported by a small, Washington, DC office and locally led teams in program countries so as maximize local capacity and investment, and minimize organizational overhead.


Position Summary

The Program Manager will provide overall strategic and technical leadership of GFI’s International Programs through effective management of program staff, oversight of program compliance and operations, and sound fiscal management of grants and contracts. The Program Manager is a senior member of GFI’s leadership team and will contribute to the strategic direction, growth and mission goals of the organization. A substantial part of time and leadership will be focused on program work in Asia and North Africa.

The Right Candidate will   

  • Be a self-starter and natural leader, comfortable performing in a dynamic office setting and ready to step forward and manage up, and not just wait for direction.
  • Be a great connector with an interest and ability to reach out and build relationships for the success of her/his programs, professional development and the organization as a whole.
  • Be a strong administrator with a high attention to detail so as to ensure the accurate, timely and effective implementation of program and organizational goals, including reports, budgets, proposals, compliance oversight, and other essential deliverables.
  • Be passionate about the people, places and programs that are under her/his management and rely on direct relationships and information, with a commitment to personal, not just electronic connectivity.
  • Have excellent program management experience, particularly on initiatives that prioritize human rights, economic empowerment and the provision of more decent work. Experience with US Government grants and compliance is a plus.

Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Oversee the successful implementation of a portfolio of existing GFI programs and provide leadership in the development of new programs and program strategies to deepen the impact of GFI’s work.
  • Identify, hire and supervise staff in GFI program field offices, and in collaboration with GFI partners.
  • Develop and manage thoughtful monitoring and evaluation plans that effectively track and assess program progress and impact, and inform strategic decision making on program activities and direction.
  • Ensure compliance by GFI and program partner staff with all GFI policies and procedures and requirements under grant agreements in the programs under management.
  • Provide accurate reports to donors on all programmatic and fiscal deliverables. 
Financial Management
  • Develop and manage all budget activities of GFI programs, including administration and grants.
  • Oversee financial operations within GFI field offices and among subgrantees where relevant.
  • Develop and prepare budget reports and financial projections.
  • Ensure full compliance with GFI fiscal policies and procedures by all program staff and partners.

Office Management

  • Train, mentor and supervise junior program staff and interns.
  • Contribute to the development of annual plans and reports.
  • Develop and oversee work plans for program staff and program-focused support from the Board of Managers, Founder and Executive Director.

 Organizational Strategy and Development

  • Work with philanthropic organizations, institutions and individuals to identify support for GFI programs.
  • Provide strategic support and engagement with GFI partners, affinity groups, supporters and the general public through on and offline tools and communications platforms.
  • Serve as a representative for GFI and our program partners at events, conferences and other public forums.

Qualifications

  • 5-10 years of related experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Masters preferred (or equivalent level of work experience)
  • Strong research, writing and communications skills
  • High competence using standard office software systems including word processing, spreadsheets, power point and database, proficiency in web-based design and application systems is a plus
  • English language required - French, Arabic or Spanish is a plus
  • United States citizenship or work Visa
