Worker Voice

From grassroots data to collective organizing, worker voice is crucial to inform reliable policies and build a fairer economy. With the growing reach and influence of the knowledge economy, local partners must have the tools to collect data and drive global thought leadership on the issues related to the working poor, not think tanks in high-income countries that are removed from the daily realities. As informal workers are often left out of national statistics and social dialogues, data from the grassroots level fills an important knowledge gap to create a more accurate understanding of the economy. Through grassroots data, we can develop informed recommendations, facilitate inclusive multi-stakeholder dialogues, and advocate for policies that are fair and just for all workers.

GFI’s Inclusive Labor Institute (ILI) provides workers with training and services around grassroots data collection and capacity-building to ensure that knowledge and solutions can be sustainably created and proliferated. In addition, ILI is currently developing policy and advocacy resources based on the success of GFI and TILI programs, which led to legislative changes such as the passage of the 2020 Auto-Entrepreneur Law in Tunisia.
